Repairing a lamp installed without a junction box

If you have an old lamp that is not attached to the wall or ceiling with a junction box, you must repair it by removing it, installing a junction box and installing a new lamp. Lamps that simply protrude from the ceiling or wall without a junction box are a fire in the making. Use this simple step-by-step guide to remove the old lamp and install a new one with a suitable junction box.

Turning off the power

Go to the main switch box in your home and find the circuit breaker that powers the lamp you want to replace. Turn off the circuit breaker.

Remove the old lamp

Once you are satisfied that the fixture is no longer powered, remove the screws that secure it to the wall or ceiling and pull out the wiring. Disconnect the wiring and discard the old lamp.

Finding the nearest hanger bolt

Use a hanger bolt finder to locate the hanger bolt closest to where the old lamp was installed. If you are lucky, the old lamp was screwed to a hanger bolt and the installation of the new junction box will be much easier. If not, simply choose the hanger bolt closest to where the old lamp was installed.

Cut out the hole for the junction box

Take your plasterboard saw or cutter and carefully cut out the hole for the junction box. Do not throw away the piece of plasterboard you cut out, as you may need it to touch up the plasterboard where the old lamp was installed.

Insert the wiring into the junction box

Pierce the opening tabs of the junction box and insert the wiring from the circuit breaker to the junction box. If possible, pull out a few extra centimetres so that the new lamp can be connected.

Fix the junction box to the pin

Use a screwdriver and the screws supplied with the junction box to attach it to the stud. Make sure that the junction box is positioned at the correct depth and is flush with the wall or ceiling.

Wiring the lamp

Connect the wire from the junction box to the new lamp. Be sure to check the polarity of the wiring before making the connections. When twisting the two pieces of wire, secure them with a wire nut to ensure a better connection.
