3 common problems with the under-sink water filter

Most sink water filter problems can be easily solved without having to call in a professional plumber. The most common problems are filter clogging, tank damage and water type. To assess the problem, get an old towel to catch any drips and a torch, as areas under sinks are usually quite dark.

Clogged filter

When was the last time the filter was changed? The job of a filter is to trap particles in the water to prevent them from coming out of the tap. Most manufacturers of water filter systems recommend changing the filter at specific regular intervals, such as every month or every 90 days. If the filter has been doing its job for too long, it may simply be clogged with residue. The solution is simple: replace the filter. If the filter is reusable, clean it thoroughly, replace it and it should be fine.

Once the filter has been replaced, run water through it to check that the system is working as it should. If the problem persists, it is possible that a component of the filter pump is faulty or simply needs cleaning. If you can easily dismantle the system, check that there is no build-up of dirt inside that could restrict water flow. If there is no corrosion or clogging, the pump may be faulty. Sometimes they wear out and, working too long against a clogged filter, wear out faster.

Damage to the tank

Most water filters require water to move through them at a good speed for the filter system to function properly. The water tank may have reached the end of its service life, or it may be excessively corroded and unable to convey water to the filter at a sufficiently high pressure, so it may need to be replaced. Check the tank pressure and make sure it is set correctly for the municipal water pressure in the area. This pressure can vary from block to block in a neighbourhood and can make a difference in the operation of the unit. If the water pressure in the house is low, it could be a more serious problem of clogged pipes from the street, such as debris build-up or tree roots.

Type of water

Sometimes the water in the area is too difficult for a filter to handle and operate properly. This can be caused by extremely hard or soft water, which often causes mineral sediments to accumulate in pipes and filters in a very short time. In this case, a water purification system could be the solution. Water purifiers tend to last longer than filters. Some water purifiers are without filters, while others are equipped with a filter system, so the filter may need to be changed regularly, but the unit itself may be more reliable in the long run.
