How to install a ball valve

Whether you need to replace a ball valve because it is defective or you are carrying out a bathroom renovation, it can be useful to know how to do it yourself. By following a few steps, you can save time and money.

Empty the cistern

If you are replacing an existing ball valve, you must start the process of installing a new valve by emptying the cistern. To do this, disconnect the water supply to the toilet and draw the water out of the cistern. This will allow you to access the mechanism more easily and work more smoothly.

Access

Access the area of the cistern where the new component is to be fitted. Remove the cistern cover and set it aside, resting it flat so that it is not in danger of slipping and breaking. Although the cistern cover should simply lift off, the flush lever on top of the cistern must first be removed. The push-button flush must also be unscrewed and removed.

Removing the existing

Once the internal mechanism has been exposed, take a good look at it to realise the position of each component. You will find that the existing float arm that supports the ball valve is supported by a split pin that can be straightened to allow its release and removal. In this way you will be free to remove the plug at the end of the cylindrical component, the so-called piston.

If it is difficult to remove, pour a small amount of lubricating oil on the fastener and allow it to act on the thread to loosen it. After unscrewing the end cap, slide on the rest of the piston and the end washer.

Installation of replacement part

Use the instructions included with your new ball valve kit to familiarise yourself with all components and how they fit together. Before replacing any components, use a piece of wire wool to remove any debris or mineral deposits from the original stem that supports the piston.

Replace the new washer before reassembling the entire piston and fixing it in place. The float arm can then be reattached. To prevent the fasteners from stiffening again, apply a small amount of Vaseline to the threads before reassembling the end cap.
