How to replace the toilet tank gasket

Replacing the toilet tank gasket is a simple operation to perform if you have leaks in your toilet. Below, we explain how to complete this project with the right materials and instructions.

Turn off the water

Turn off the water at the stop valve. This is usually located on the side of the toilet, towards the rear. Then flush the toilet to empty the remaining water. You can then use a plunger to remove the water from the bowl itself. Use a crescent spanner to disconnect the water supply line.

Remove the lid

Remove the tank lid. Use a sponge to absorb excess water that may have remained in the toilet tank. This will create a more comfortable working space and prevent water from seeping into the new connections.

Loosen and remove

Now that you see the inside of the tank, you should be able to locate the bolts that secure the tank in place. Use the crescent spanner and fasten the bolts from underneath the tank while loosening the bolts from above.

You can now easily and carefully remove the tank and place it next to you. You will have to place it on some sort of padding to avoid damaging it. Make sure that the fitting is facing upwards when you put the tank down.

Rubbing alcohol

Now is the time to clean with rubbing alcohol and a rag. Take the old gasket and remove it along with any residue present. Use the rubbing alcohol and rag for best results.

Inserting the new gasket

Once the tank has been cleaned, the new gasket can be placed on the fitting. Insert the bolts through the top of the tank. Use the washers on the inside and outside of the bolts.

Back in place

After replacing the gasket and washers, it is time to put the tank back in place. Taking great care not to damage the tank, lift it back into place and secure it.
