Replacing a bath tap with diverter lever

A bath faucet diverter is a small flap behind the handle of your bath faucet that determines whether water flows from the shower or the bath faucet. With a single-lever faucet, you will probably need to push or pull the shower faucet handle to divert the water. With a three-handle bath mixer, the middle handle controls the diverter. If you want to replace the diverter on the bath mixer, you will need to access the pipes behind the shower mixer handle.

Remove the existing cartridge

First, close the shower tray so that no parts of the shower can fall down the drain. You can place a towel over the drain to do this. Next, remove the handle above the shaft of the shower fitting. Remove the screw and pull the handle off. You need to turn off the water by turning the shut-off screws for cold and hot water. Finally, remove the nut that holds the cartridge in place. You should do this with soft pliers so as not to damage the soft copper that is normally used for the pipes. Pull the cartridge out slowly with the pliers.

Remove the spindle of the tap

The diverter rod is located on the back of the cartridge. It is a small plastic flap. You will see a round nut that holds the stem in place. Use pliers to carefully remove the nut. If the nut is stuck, be careful. Use oil to loosen the nut and try using a spanner when the nut is unscrewed. If you damage the system, you will have to replace the cartridge completely.

Install a new stem

Take the cartridge to your local hardware store to make sure the replacement stem fits properly. Since hardware stores carry a variety of stems, you will probably have no trouble finding the right new stem for the tub faucet. The new stem should slide easily onto the same bracket that held the old stem. Tighten the nut. You should practise fitting the new stem into the cartridge before reinserting the cartridge into the wall. If you have difficulty inserting the new shaft, you can use a mild lubricant. Again, be careful not to damage the soft metal of the holder.

Reinstalling and testing the cartridge

Reinstall the cartridge in the same way you removed it. You can use some tape to cover the nut that secures the cartridge. This will ensure a good seal even if the cartridge is older. Remember to turn the hot and cold water shut-off screws back to " on " before putting the handles back on. Once everything is back in place, test your work. Turn on both the hot and cold water. Make sure that the diverter works in both directions.
