How to lay a drain in the bathtub

 


As with most clogged drains, the first method to try with a clogged tub is a toilet plunger. However, if plunging the drain doesn't yield results, the next step is drain relocation. Don't panic if you find that the drain hole doesn't have room for the snake - you can run the cable through the overflow plate instead. Often the drain blockage is at the plug of the drain, so you may not need the snake at all. If the clog is further down the drain, you may be able to solve the problem without the help of a plumber.

Unscrew the metal plate under the tub faucet, called the overflow plate, making sure the screws don't fall into the drain. Remove the overflow plate. It is connected to the plug mechanism for the tub; pull it out through the hole behind the overflow plate as well.

Put on rubber work gloves. Use a paper towel to remove any hair caught on the underside of the plug mechanism. If there is a large amount of hair stuck to the mechanism, this may be the cause of the clog and you do not need to snake the drain.

Run the faucet for a few seconds and see if the drain is still clogged. If the drain is now flowing freely, replace the plug mechanism and overflow plate. If the drain is still clogged, remove a coil of pipe.

Insert the tip of the snake into the hole normally covered by the overflow plate. Crank the crank and pull the snake's cable about 75 cm into the pipe.

Continue cranking the crank and push the snake forward and down into the drain. Crank and push until you feel the snake hit the obstruction. Turn the cable and crank until the snake pushes through the obstruction.

Slowly crank the crank backwards to pull the snake back out of the drain. The snake will be covered in sludge, so wipe it off with paper towels and dispose of it as you go.

Replace the plug mechanism and overflow plate and screw the plate back on. Flush the drain with hot water to remove any residue in the pipes.
