How to repair a leaky faucet

A leaking or dripping tap can be one of the most annoying sounds in the home. The good news is that it is usually an easy problem to fix, which can hopefully be dealt with before you lose your head! A leaky faucet that is dealt with as soon as the leak is discovered can be a quick and easy fix. But if a leak is ignored, it could potentially lead to further plumbing problems, resulting in more expensive repairs.  The internal parts of a faucet can corrode or become covered with mineral deposits. Faucets contain gaskets, o-rings and washers that can become defective and fail, causing the faucet to leak. Worn or incorrect washer This is one of the most common causes of tap leakage. Given its frequency, it would be wise to start here when trying to repair a leaking tap. Whenever a compression tap is used, a rubber washer is pushed against the valve seat. This exerts constant pressure and friction on the washer, causing it to wear.  In addition to a worn washer, it is possib...

The main causes of low water pressure in your home

Image
The water pressure in your home's pipes can make a big difference. It can make a big difference in the speed of rinsing dishes and the satisfaction of a shower after a long, hot day. Sometimes low water pressure can be easily solved. Other times, however, a professional may be needed.  Check the main shut-off valve Making sure that the main shut-off valve is in the right position can increase water pressure. Why? The main shutoff valve acts as a passageway for water to enter the house. If this valve is not fully open, it will limit the amount of water passing through. Similarly, closing the valve will completely cut off the water supply. Let's start by checking the main shut-off valve. It can be located in the basement or on the outside wall of a service area of the house.  Is the water meter valve fully open? Like the main shut-off valve , the water meter valve is a main water source, which affects the water pressure. However, unlike the main shut-off valve, the water m...

Tips for maintaining kitchen plumbing

Image
Tips for kitchen taps Kitchen taps come in many shapes and sizes, finishes and styles. The first thing to know if you are looking for new kitchen plumbing is the plumbing under the sink. Every sink is different. Some have four mounting holes, others one. You also need to take note of the kitchen sink's water shut-off valve. If it is an older house, the valve connection may be a different size than the new kitchen plumbing, which means that the water shut-off valve and the kitchen sink may also need to be replaced. While examining the seemingly endless options of kitchen plumbing fixtures on the market today, both form and function should be taken into consideration. In general, it is preferable that the new fixture matches the existing kitchen hardware. Unless you want to buy all new drawers and other kitchen fittings, be sure to purchase a kitchen faucet with a similar finish to your current kitchen. Functionality is especially important when buying a new kitchen faucet.  W...

What to do if the toilet is flushing?

Image
Is your toilet leaking internally? If water does not flow out of the floor, your ghost flush has an internal leak . There could be something wrong with the rubber door that allows water to flow out of the flush and causes the toilet to constantly fill up. Checking the integrity of the toilet door You can perform a simple test with food colouring to determine whether it is the flapper that is causing the toilet to leak. Simply put a few drops of food colouring into the rear tank of the toilet. Leave it for about 30 minutes. If you see the same colour in the toilet bowl, you will know that it is the flapper that is causing the leakage inside the toilet. Are there any signs of damage or debris on the flush flapper door? Clean the flush door and the flush valve surface to potentially stop the toilet leaking. Check that the flapper chain is correctly adjusted and that the flapper fits tightly around the flush opening. Replace the toilet flapper if necessary If this does not solve the ...

How to repair a running toilet

Image
Identifying the problem The first step in repairing a running toilet is to identify the source of the problem. Typically, a running toilet is caused by a faulty flap valve or a malfunctioning fill valve. The flap valve controls the flow of water from the tank to the bowl, while the fill valve regulates the water level in the tank. Checking the flap valve Start by lifting the lid of the toilet tank and observing the flapper valve. If the flapper valve appears worn, deformed or damaged, it may not create an adequate seal, causing water leakage. To solve the problem, turn off the water supply to the toilet and empty the tank by flushing. Remove the old flap valve and replace it with a new one. Make sure that the new flap valve is aligned correctly and that it creates a tight seal when closed. Inspecting the filling valve If the flap valve is functioning properly, the problem may lie in the filling valve. Check the filling valve for signs of leakage or a faulty flotation mechanism. A...
