How to repair a leaky faucet

A leaking or dripping tap can be one of the most annoying sounds in the home. The good news is that it is usually an easy problem to fix, which can hopefully be dealt with before you lose your head!

A leaky faucet that is dealt with as soon as the leak is discovered can be a quick and easy fix. But if a leak is ignored, it could potentially lead to further plumbing problems, resulting in more expensive repairs.

The internal parts of a faucet can corrode or become covered with mineral deposits. Faucets contain gaskets, o-rings and washers that can become defective and fail, causing the faucet to leak.

Worn or incorrect washer

This is one of the most common causes of tap leakage. Given its frequency, it would be wise to start here when trying to repair a leaking tap. Whenever a compression tap is used, a rubber washer is pushed against the valve seat. This exerts constant pressure and friction on the washer, causing it to wear.

In addition to a worn washer, it is possible that the washer was installed incorrectly or that the wrong size or type of washer was used.

Worn O-Ring

The tap cartridge contains a screw that holds the tap handle in place. This is a stem screw, to which a small disc is attached. This small disc is the o-ring.

Corroded valve seat

In compression taps, the valve seat is located between the tap and the spout. Water sediment can accumulate and cause corrosion of the valve seat, leading to leakage in the spout area. By regularly cleaning the valve seat, water sediment can be removed and corrosion can be prevented.

Tightening valve parts

Over time, when the tap is used, some internal parts of the tap may loosen. The adjusting ring and stem screw nuts may loosen. Loose parts may cause leakage near the tap handle. You may be able to tighten the sealing nut, or it may need to be replaced completely.

Broken plumbing

Although not common, a leaking tap could be the result of a broken pipe or fittings. A broken pipe interferes with proper water pressure and can result in a dripping tap. If you have tried the above suggestions and the problem is still not resolved, it is time to contact plumbing professionals.
