How to Install Shower Drains

 Installing a shower drain may seem like a daunting plumbing task, but with the right tools and a clear understanding of the process, it is very manageable, even for the most experienced DIYers. If you are working on a new build or a major renovation, make sure the subfloor is clean, level, and ready for installation.

Start by inserting the drain body through the hole in the shower pan or tray itself. Most modern shower pans come with a pre-cut hole for the drain, but you need to make sure it lines up with the plumbing. Apply plumber's putty around the bottom of the drain flange to create a watertight seal. On the underside of the pan, secure it with a locknut and a rubber gasket or washer, which helps prevent leaks.

If you are connecting to PVC pipe, apply primer to both the pipe and the inside of the drain fitting. Once the primer has dried, apply PVC cement and join the two pieces together, making sure the connection is secure and properly aligned. If you are installing the drain into a tiled shower floor rather than a shower pan, you will likely be using a three-piece drain system. This type of system includes a base that attaches to the plumbing, a center section that adjusts to the height of the mortar bed, and a top flange that ends flush with the tiles.

After installing the drain, check for leaks. You can do this by running water through the drain and inspecting the connection points underneath for signs of moisture. If you notice any leaks, you may need to tighten the fittings or reapply plumbing putty. Once you are sure the connection is watertight, you can proceed with installing the rest of the shower components, whether it is tiling the floor or attaching the shower pan.
