How to Fix a Tap in the Kitchen

A dripping tap in the kitchen can be more than just an annoying sound—it can lead to higher water bills and waste valuable water resources. Fortunately, fixing a dripping tap is a relatively simple task that most homeowners can do themselves.

Identify the Type of Tap

Before you begin, it’s important to know the type of tap you have. The most common types are compression taps, ball taps, cartridge taps, and ceramic disk taps. The method of fixing a dripping tap may vary slightly depending on the design. For the purpose of this guide, we will focus on compression taps, which are commonly found in older kitchen sinks.

Turn Off the Water Supply

Safety first! Before starting any plumbing work, make sure to turn off the water supply to the tap. Turn these valves clockwise to stop the flow of water. Once the water is turned off, open the tap to release any remaining water in the pipes.

Plug the Drain

It’s a good idea to plug the sink drain with a cloth or a sink plug. This will prevent any small parts, such as washers or screws, from falling down the drain during the repair process.

Remove the Tap Handle

To access the inner components of the tap, you’ll need to remove the handle. Look for a small screw at the top of the handle, which may be covered by a decorative cap. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the cap, and then use a screwdriver to remove the screw. Once the screw is removed, pull the handle off the tap.

Inspect the Washer or Cartridge

The washer is a rubber or silicone part that seals the valve and stops water flow when the tap is turned off. If it’s damaged or worn, water will leak through. In compression taps, the washer is typically located at the base of the valve. For cartridge or ball taps, the issue may lie within the cartridge itself.

Use a wrench to carefully remove the valve stem or cartridge, depending on the type of tap you have. Once removed, inspect the washer or cartridge for signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, stiffness, or damage.

Replace the Faulty Parts

If the washer or cartridge is damaged, take it to your local hardware store to find an exact replacement. When replacing the washer, make sure it fits snugly and is seated properly within the valve. If you’re replacing a cartridge, ensure the new one matches the specifications of your tap. It’s crucial to use the correct replacement parts to avoid further leaks.
