Simple hydraulic repairs

A plumbing disaster occurs on all fronts. Not only is it annoying and disruptive to the family, but it often damages property. Then, to make matters worse, a plumber has to be called in. Plumbers are expensive anyway, but of course no plumbing emergency ever occurs during normal working hours. You can be sure that your plumbing nightmare will begin when the emergency surcharges are highest.

Wouldn't it be nice to avoid all the hassle and costs? Well, it is possible. By learning some simple do-it-yourself plumbing repairs, you can save time, money and headaches. You can fix the plumbing problem before the walls are destroyed, or the carpets flooded and, of course, you no longer have to call a plumber in the middle of the night. Here are some simple tricks to solve your plumbing problems yourself.

Draining the entire plumbing system: sounds like a professional job, doesn't it? Actually, you can easily do it yourself if you need to empty the system due to a water hammer problem or to carry out other repairs. First of all, you need to shut off the water to the central meter in your home. Locate the meter: you will see a valve on the side of the meter that is connected to the pipes leading into the house and one on the side that leads to the outside. Close the valve leading to the outside. Now, enter the house and, starting at the highest level of the house, open all the taps on the sinks. After reaching the bottom of the house, go to the top and repeat the operation with the showers. Finally, repeat the operation again, this time flushing the toilet from top to bottom. At the end of the process, all the water should have flushed out of the system and should no longer flow from the taps. You are now ready to carry out further repairs.

What about the most common of plumbing problems: a clogged toilet or drain? First, try chemical treatments, provided you don't have a septic system. Many of these treatments are identical to what a plumber would use to fix the problem and will work for you too, at a fraction of the price. If it doesn't work, a drain snake inserted into the toilet/drain will remove the blockage and you'll be fine.
