Preventing water damage in the bathroom

Preventing water damage in the bathroom

Frequent use of water in the bathroom makes it extremely vulnerable to moisture accumulation and potential water damage. By inspecting it regularly, water damage can be reduced.

The following inspections are easy to perform and should be done once every three months to keep the bathroom in good condition and to prevent potential water damage in the bathtub, shower, pipe joints and plumbing, sinks, cabinets and toilet. Do not neglect to carry out these inspections and be thorough in performing them. Keep in mind that these simple inspections can save you a lot of money by providing early indications of water damage:

Bathtub and shower

The shower and bathtub require special care and maintenance. Check the tiles and replace them if they are cracked.

Make sure there is no missing grout between the tiles. Inspect and replace cracked caulking where the walls meet the floor or bathtub.

Clogged drains and pipes prevent the tub from drying out and may indicate serious problems below the tub.

Consult a professional immediately to avoid structural damage.

Pay attention to discolourations or soft areas around the walls of the bathtub, as they may indicate an internal leak.

Plumbing

Signs of water damage are difficult to detect since most of the plumbing is installed inside the walls.

Pay particular attention to floor and wall moisture and stains, as they could indicate an invisible plumbing problem. Also check the moisture levels in adjacent rooms.

Sinks and cupboards

Sinks and cabinets are exposed to moisture on a daily basis and are often neglected. Carry out regular inspections under the sink and on the worktop above it. Repair any drips in the siphon, as they may indicate drainage problems. Look around the sink; pipes draining slowly may indicate a blocked drain. Replace sink gaskets if they are cracked or loose.

The toilet

The toilet is a vulnerable water junction. Check the water lines and look for leaks around the toilet seat, in the hose and under the water tank. If you notice signs of damp on the floor around the toilet, check for leaks in the rim of the toilet and in the seals of the tank.
