New toilet? Do-it-yourself work

Remove the old toilet

Turn off the water supply to the toilet.

Caution: Often shut-off valves have not been closed for years and tend to leak when shut off. Be prepared for a leaky shutoff valve. It is a good idea to add a couple of drops of penetrating oil before turning the knob. If the toilet is old, it is a good idea to replace the shutoff valve when you replace the toilet.

Remove the water

Rinse the toilet to flush out as much water as possible. Use a sponge or towel to absorb any water left in the tank and bowl.

Disconnect the water supply

If the nut is tight, use a wrench to loosen it and keep a towel handy to catch any remaining water that may leak out.

Remove the bolts

Remove the cabinet bolts that hold the toilet to the floor. They are usually covered by caps that can be removed.

Remove the toilet

Gently swing the toilet to break the seal of the old wax ring and lift it off the flange. Set it aside on a protective surface.

Clean the area

Using a putty knife, scrape off the old wax ring from the flange, making sure to remove all residue.

Prepare the new toilet

Install the cabinet bolts of the new toilet into the flange, aligning them securely. Place the new wax ring (or rubber gasket) on the bottom of the toilet bowl outlet.

Installation of the new toilet

Carefully lower the toilet bowl onto the flange, securing the bolts that go through the holes in the toilet base. Press down firmly to seal the wax ring.

Washers and nuts

Install washers and nuts on the flange bolts. Tighten them evenly to avoid breaking the porcelain. Use a spirit level to make sure the toilet is positioned correctly.

Install the toilet tank

Place the rubber gasket on the bottom of the tank outlet (if it is a two-piece toilet). The instructions will give you all the details.
