How to increase shower water pressure

 Causes of low water pressure

There are several reasons why the water pressure in the shower is low. First of all, you have to check whether the problem only affects the shower head or all water outlets in the house.

If it is more than one outlet, the problem could be due to a faulty water pressure regulator. Or it could be a problem that extends to the plumbing in the house or neighbourhood. A professional will be able to determine this.

Are the bathroom drains noisy? It could be a problem within the plumbing system, such as a build-up of minerals. Usually, the only solution is to replace the pipes.

Sometimes it is only the shower head that has low pressure. It is possible that the shower head is clogged due to the accumulation of mineral salts and other debris. Since it is only a blocked flow, you can quickly solve the problem.

The water heater may be broken if it is only the hot water tap that has low pressure. Again, a professional should be called in to fix the problem because of the safety risks.

Cleaning the shower head

The first step is to clean the shower head. If the shower head is the only place where the water pressure is low, this may solve the problem.

Remove dry debris from the holes with a scrubber. Sometimes this is enough to improve the water pressure!

You can also mix an equal amount of white vinegar with water and put it in a plastic bag. Wrap the bag around the shower head and let it soak up the liquid.

Check the valves

Most houses have two main shutoff valves that control the water. Check that your shut-off valve is fully open. Sometimes, after a repair or during cleaning, the valve may be left partially open.

The main shut-off valve is usually located at the point where the primary pipe system enters the house. Sometimes it is located on the outside. The valve is usually red in colour and may be a gate or lever valve.

If the water company has carried out an inspection or if plumbing work has recently been carried out, this valve may not be fully open. If open, it should be parallel to the water pipe.

If you do not feel comfortable moving the valves, call a plumber to inspect the problem.

Checking the water pressure regulator

The water pressure regulator controls the pressure to prevent damage to the plumbing system. If the water pressure in your home suddenly drops, and you have a regulator, check it. You may also notice a sudden high water pressure.
