Signs of a water leak in the bathroom

If a leak occurs, it is essential to identify the problem early. This is the best way to prevent the problem from getting worse. Unfortunately, spotting a leak is often easier said than done.

Puddles and wetlands

Water that appears unexpectedly is a bad sign. If you have not taken a bath or shower, but water is still on the floor, it means there is a leak.

Keep an eye out for puddles on the floor, around the shower base and/or in the bathroom cabinets. The water is coming from somewhere!

Mould

Mould is not uncommon in bathrooms.

It is found in damp and wet environments, which makes the bathroom a favoured territory for mould growth. This is true in areas such as the shower.

However, mould can also be a sign of a leak. Remember the damp spots we mentioned above? It is only a matter of time before mould grows there.

Peeling wallpaper

If you do not have a wallpaper in your bathroom, skip this point. However, for those who do have it, read on!

Basically, the moisture underneath a layer of wallpaper causes it to detach from the wall. Of course, this happens over time anyway, when the adhesive gives way.

But don't let this fact dissuade you from suspecting a leak. A well-covered bathroom with wallpaper will not come off if there is no problem.

Tiling problems

Speaking of things coming off the walls, pay attention to the bathroom tiles.

Never ignore them if they are broken or loose, or have damaged tiling. These can let water through and affect the materials underneath in a so-called 'tile leak'.

Tile leaks can be expensive to repair. If you are lucky, you can get away with simply replacing the tiles and mortar/caulk. Sometimes, however, a brand new substrate is required.

The key message is to check your bathroom tiles regularly for damage and wear! Call a professional for assistance at the first sign of a problem.

Strange noises

Nothing terrifies homeowners like the sound of water dripping into walls! Any obvious water noise should be addressed as soon as possible. A leak has broken out that could cause incalculable damage to the property.

Keep an eye out for even the most subtle and unrecognisable sounds. For example, a high-pitched hissing sound in the walls may come from a pipe that has developed a slight crack.

Call the professionals if you notice watery noises that persist even in the absence of appliances. The Emergency Plumber in Sheffield is your right contact partner. Call us now.
