Quick steps for repairing a water leak

Detecting and repairing water leaks is a skill that most homeowners should keep in their back pocket for when leaks occur, and sooner or later they will occur. Repairing a leaking pipe, a faulty system or a running toilet is often an easy fix, depending on the type of leak and your level of expertise.

Shutting off the water supply

First of all. If you have already located the leak, shut off the water supply before attempting to repair it. Under kitchen and bathroom sinks, as well as under the toilet, there are shut-off valves. Turn the valve anticlockwise to close the water supply. In some cases, it may be necessary to close the main water valve located outside the house.

After shutting off the water supply in the house or at a specific point in the house, it is advisable to open the taps to empty the pipes before starting to repair the water leak.

Clean the water and dry the pipes

Clean the water that has accumulated on the surfaces surrounding the leak. After absorbing the water, it is time to dry the pipe(s) so that the putty can be applied to a dry surface.

Applying hydraulic putty to the leaking pipe

Hydraulic mastic is a powerful repair tool used to patch and repair leaking pipes. Before handling plumber's putty, it is recommended to wear gloves to avoid chemical burns on the skin. Once the gloves are on, start tearing off a piece of epoxy putty from the tube and stir to activate it.

Replace the leaking tube

If you are looking for a more permanent solution, you will have to replace the defective section of the tube. To do this, you will need to go to the hardware store to purchase the right size fixtures, fittings and tubing.

Using clamps to repair water leaks

Replacing entire pipe sections is expensive, so for smaller leaks it may be more cost-effective to use a pipe clamp to repair water leaks. Pipe clamps have rubber seals on both ends to create a watertight seal around the defective pipe and prevent it from leaking. These are also readily available at any local hardware store and require little or no prior plumbing knowledge to install effectively.
