Low water pressure in your home?
Obsolete equipment
Obsolete equipment is one of the most common causes of low water pressure in homes. Old galvanised steel water pipes can corrode to such an extent that water flow is severely restricted. A build-up of mineral deposits such as sediment and limescale can clog systems, preventing water from flowing freely.
This not only has an impact on water pressure, but can also affect water quality. Even if the water pipes corrode on the inside, one can notice this phenomenon even without seeing the limescale build-up. The accumulation of materials inside the pipe can gradually close the line.
This problem takes years to develop. That is why the reduction in water pressure is very gradual. However, if you move into a house with outdated steel pipes, the problem can start earlier.
Defective pressure regulators
Pressure regulators are control valves that regulate the pressure in the pipe system. They play an important role in reducing the pressure to a safe level that does not damage the pipes.
These devices are not present in every home, but a faulty or clogged regulator can cause low water pressure. The opposite effect can also occur: a surge in water pressure.
Although it is possible to replace a pressure regulator yourself, it is in your interest to have it checked by a professional. An authorised technician can assess the situation and repair the regulator valve or install a new one.
Water valves
There are generally two main shut-off valves that control the flow of water: one at the meter and the other inside the house. If one of these valves is completely or partially closed, the water pressure is reduced.
When the water is temporarily shut off and then reopened, one of the valves may accidentally become partially closed. If you suspect that the cause of low water pressure is a closed valve, check that both main valves are fully open.
Clogged water pipes
What happens when you open the tap? Does the water come out with normal pressure and then immediately slow down with a noticeable drop in pressure? If so, it is possible that the water pipes are clogged.
Generally, pipes become clogged over time due to the accumulation of rust, mineral deposits and other debris inside the pipes. This, in turn, restricts the flow of water. Clogging often occurs in galvanised pipes. This is why it is no longer a common material for new pipes. However, it was once the material of choice and is still found in many homes.
Some of the clogging materials are sand, water minerals, pollutants and dirt. These materials can enter the water pipes through the sink or small cracks in the pipes. Clogging can often occur if the pipes are also close to or elevated above the ground.
