How to spot a hidden plumbing leak before it damages your home

It is easy to spot a leaky tap or a flooded drain, but when it comes to a leaking pipe in a less obvious spot, such as the wall, finding the culprit requires a bit of detective work. Although hidden leaks often remain hidden until the damage caused to the house is severe, there are signs that can help you spot a leak before a complete disaster occurs.

Keep an eye on your water bill

Unless your household's water use has changed drastically, you should not notice any major fluctuations in your water bill, especially a large increase. However, if the most recent bill has suddenly skyrocketed for no reason, the cause is probably a leak in the house. Even if you inspect your home and find no obvious indications of a leak, it is advisable to contact a professional plumber to further examine the plumbing in your home.

Trust your nose

Sometimes, before you see a leak, you can smell it. If you have noticed a musty or damp smell invading your home and no amount of cleaning has eliminated the unpleasant odour, you may think that a leaking pipe is hiding somewhere in your home.

Discoloured walls or ceilings

Probably one of the most obvious signs of a leak is discolouration of the walls or ceiling. While stained walls are a clear indication, chipped paint is another clue to the presence of a hidden leak. The moisture produced by the leak can cause the paint on the ceiling or walls to separate and crack. Crumbling or blistering drywall also indicates a serious moisture problem, which usually results from a leaking pipe.

Consult the water meter

If you suspect that a leak is wreaking havoc somewhere in your home, but you are still not one hundred per cent sure, your water meter could provide the answer you are looking for. For a quick and easy test, make sure that no one in the house is using water; this includes the dishwasher, washing machine, sinks and showers.
