THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS IN THE OFFICE

Whether it is an office in a commercial building or a construction site, both present a number of potential electrical hazards. It is important that electrical maintenance and safety checks are carried out regularly by a professional team to avoid any problems.

WORN AND DAMAGED EQUIPMENT

Sometimes, due to the team's busy schedule, the office's appliances and electronic devices are neglected. You think everything is working properly until the equipment gets damaged or, worse, you get an electric shock.

To prevent this from happening, regularly check cables, wires and cords for damage. If you notice any defects, have them replaced immediately.

INSUFFICIENT EARTHING

Without proper earthing, the risk of electrocution is higher. Have the earthing checked by professionals.

OVERLOADED CIRCUITS

There may not be enough sockets in your office for the number of people working there, so depend on extension cords. Always make sure that these extension cords are evenly distributed to avoid overloading circuits. They should be placed neatly so that they do not pose a tripping or splashing hazard. It is best to use smart extension cords with integrated on/off switches and overload protection. The use of adapters is also a good idea.

DAMAGED INSULATION

Inspect the insulation of your equipment and make sure that the power supply is switched off. If it is of poor quality, replace it with new, high-quality insulation. Never use adhesive tape as a quick fix for visible damage, as it will not hold up and can be dangerous.

INCORRECT WIRING

Did you know that the size of cables is important? Probably not, and we don't expect you to. But incorrectly sized wires can overheat and cause a fire.

EXPOSED ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS

Temporary lighting, loose insulation of power cables, open power units... These are some examples of exposed electrical components, which can cause electric shocks and burns. If you spot any of these items, be sure to apply appropriate protective mechanisms and warning labels, then contact a professional electrician to carry out repairs as soon as possible.

HIGH RISK WORKPLACES

Of course, not all workplaces are the same. Some are at higher risk of electrical hazards. What does this mean? These are workplaces with operating conditions that expose equipment to moisture, heat, corrosive chemicals and dust, to name a few. These locations must be inspected and cleaned regularly, and equipment must be tested regularly.

LIGHTING

Never leave the office with the lights still on (or any other equipment). If the workplace still uses halogen lamps, they must be replaced immediately with safer alternatives. Uncovered lighting wires must be stored safely and tidily. Make sure that the lights do not overheat.
