How to replace a toilet in Nottingham

 Emptying the toilet

Turn off the water to the toilet. If you do not have a corner stop valve near the toilet, you must turn off the water at the main stop valve in your home. Flush the toilet several times to remove water from the bowl and the tank. Then absorb the remaining water with a cloth or sponge.

Remove the supply hose

Disconnect the water supply hose. This is the hose that connects from the stop valve to the toilet tank. Unscrew it from the tank.

Remove the tank

If the toilet is in two pieces, you will first have to remove the tank. Inside the tank, unscrew the bolts that secure it to the toilet. Use an 8″ spanner to grip the washer under the tank and use the screwdriver to turn the bolt. You should now be able to remove the tank by lifting it up.

Remove the tank from the floor

Prepare to dirty the floor with some water. Remove the plugs that are above the bolts in the floor. Unscrew the nuts using the 8″ spanner. If they are corroded, you may need a hacksaw to remove them.

Tilt the bowl forward and swing it from side to side. Lift the bowl off the floor. If the bowl is tilted forwards, there will be less spillage. Place a rag in the pipe from the floor to prevent the smell of exhaust fumes from entering the bathroom.

Apply the wax seal

Turn the new bowl over and apply the new wax or rubber gasket around the hole. Place a new wax ring on the drain horn. If the ring has a rubber or plastic sleeve, the sleeve must face the toilet.

Step 6: Installing the new toilet

Turn the bowl and position it so that the bolts go through the holes. Rotate the bowl a little to make sure it is in the right place. Tighten the nuts on the bolts while sitting.

Do not over-tighten the bolts or you risk breaking the porcelain. Make sure that the toilet is level. Use small wooden planks to prop up the toilet and make it level. Over the next few days the toilet will settle a bit, so tighten the nuts from time to time so that they are secure.
