How to replace a light switch or an electrical socket

 Turn off the power

The first thing to do before replacing a light switch or an electrical outlet is to turn off the power to the circuit. Turn off the main electrical panel in your home by finding the appropriate switch and turning it to the 'off' position.

Remove Old Light Switch or Electrical Outlet

Disconnect wall cables

Disconnect the wall cables from the switch by loosening the terminal screws. These screws secure the 'hooked' end of the wires to the terminals of the switch.

Single-pole switches have three wires: Usually one black (hot), one white (neutral) and a separate earth wire (usually green or bare copper). Note that some older houses do not have a ground wire. Also, if the light switch or electrical outlet is in the middle of a circuit, there are usually two white wires.

Cut excess bare wire

Use a wire cutter to cut the excess bare wire that extends beyond the plastic insulation. Do this on all wires, unless you shorten them too much (you will only have a few centimetres of wire to work with).

Connect the new switch or socket

Connect the wires from the wall to the new switch or socket

Connect the wires from the electrical box to the corresponding terminals of the new switch or socket. Consult the manufacturer's instructions to make sure you make the correct connections for your specific switch.

For each connection, use needle-nose pliers to twist the end of each wire and bend it into the shape of a hook. Wrap the hook around the terminal screw and tighten the screw with a screwdriver.

Fasten the connections

Gently pull each connection to make sure it is secure. Wrap the insulation tape around the switch so that it covers all connections. This makes the connections even more secure and protected.

Screw in the switch or socket

After you have connected all the wires and secured them with tape, bend them in a zig-zag pattern so that they fit easily into the wall box. Push the light switch or electrical socket into place. Tighten the two screws holding it in place in the electrical box with a screwdriver.
