How to repair a leaky faucet
Repairing a leaky faucet is simple and inexpensive. It is an immediate operation and there is no need to call in a professional. The usual suspects of a leaky tap are a worn washer or gasket, a loose o-ring or rust in the valve seat. Most faucet repair kits can quickly locate and repair the problem.
How to repair a leaking single-handle tap?
Repairing a leaking bathroom or kitchen faucet is usually a quick fix, although there are several different faucet models. Each has different components and the need for unique repair procedures can make the repair more difficult.
Most knob taps include a ball or inner cartridge; in most cases, replacing the tap cartridge, ball or its components is all that is required for repair.
A disc tap has a unique design that requires a different repair technique.
Turning off the water
The first step in tap repair is to locate and close the hot and cold water shut-off valves. Valves are often located under the sink, where the water supply pipes connect to the main water system that runs to the faucet handles. Some valves have knurled knobs that must be turned clockwise to turn off the water, while others have lever valves with handles that require a quarter turn to turn off the water.
Dismantling a cartridge tap with only one handle
Carefully pry off the decorative handle cover, undo the handle screw, tilt it backwards and remove it. If the cartridge is held in place by a threaded clip, remove it with needle-nose pliers and lift it straight off.
Remove handle
Remove the tap handle from the tap body and cartridge. The plastic or metal cap that wraps around the top of the tap body conceals the mounting screw.
Remove disc cartridge
When the disc cartridge is exposed, it can be removed. Check the cartridge for damage. If it is broken or otherwise damaged, it must be replaced. If it is necessary to replace the cartridge, take the old one with you to the hardware store to avoid having to find the correct replacement.
