How to install the base of a sink cabinet

Sink cabinets are convenient places to stand. Kitchen sink cabinets can hold cleaning materials, rubbish cans or rubbish disposals, while bathroom sinks can hold paper goods, towels or toiletries.

These cabinets or sinks usually do not have drawers on the top, as the recessed basin of the sink does not allow for the necessary space. However, many do have drawers on one or both sides. The opening directly in front of the sink is usually equipped with doors, but can be covered by a curtain for a simpler solution.

If a prefabricated solution is desired, a sink cabinet can be purchased to fit the available space. However, if you have some basic carpentry and plumbing knowledge, you can also build one yourself.

Prepare the space and materials for the sink

For a smooth and healthy installation, start by clearing the space around which you will be working. The plumbing can run through the walls or directly under the sink through the floor.

Measure the width at the base. Take note of the relative positions of the drain pipes and water lines, as well as the width of the base. If it is a bathroom cabinet, obtain a suitable cabinet and shelf.

Cabinets with pipes running directly under the sink will already have holes in the base of the sink cabinet. If you want to paint the furniture, it would be easier to do this before installing it.

Preparation for installation

Before starting work on the base cabinet, it is necessary to remove all drawers and doors, especially since most of them have 'snap' hinges.

Besides making the cabinet lighter and easier to work with, this will give you more space to work inside the cabinet and avoid possible scratches or other damage to these components.

Check the markings again

Put the cabinet back in place, use a small, long drill bit to explore where the markings are, drill a small hole through the first marking and check whether it lines up with the pipe behind it. If not, correct the marking and try again.

Installing the sink

If the worktop is a moulded type with a recessed bowl, simply place it on the base cabinet and fix it in place. If, on the other hand, they are separate, it is necessary to use the template to cut out the opening through the top and the holes for the taps.
