Turn on lights - Although most appliances should be unplugged while you are away, keeping lights on can give the impression that someone is home. All you need to do is set some lights in the house on timers. For example, turn on the master bedroom at 9pm and turn off the lights a few hours later. If you do this in some rooms of the house, you will give the impression that someone is home.

Unplug electronic devices - Switch off and unplug power sockets, computers, game consoles, televisions and anything else that draws power while you are away. This will not only save you money on your utility bill, but also give you peace of mind knowing that your precious electronics will not be damaged by an unexpected storm.

Refresh yourself - No need for hot water in the house while you are away. Most water heaters have a holiday setting; use it. If yours does not have one, set the temperature to low. Just remember to turn it back up before getting in the shower when you get home! Another option is to shut off the main water supply to the house.
