Wiring a dimmer switch

A dimmer switch on a luminaire gives you complete control. Instead of lighting that is always bright, you can adjust the light level to any desired setting to add atmosphere to the room. This is easily achieved with incandescent bulbs, with which the dimmer switch works flawlessly.

Use a ballast

A dimmer switch does not work with the standard ballast of fluorescent lamps. It is necessary to install a special dimmer ballast, which does not work with all fluorescent lamps. It is also possible that the existing screw holes do not work with the ballast mounting screws, in which case new holes must be drilled. This procedure can be very complex.

Obtaining the right cable

When installing a dimmer switch on a fluorescent light, normal cable cannot be used. The cable must run between the luminaire and the wall switch.

You might be able to do this without demolishing the wall. Switch off the circuit electricity from the circuit breaker. Disconnect the wires from the appliance and connect the new wires to the free ends. At this point, loosen the wires from the wall switch and start pulling gently. In some cases, it will be possible to pull the wire directly. It will take some time and will not work if the wires are attached to the studs with staples or if they pass through holes drilled in the joists or studs.

Use the right dimmer switch

You must ensure that you buy the correct type of dimmer switch, as those made for incandescent lights will not work with fluorescent lights. You need to buy a special type of dimmer switch made especially for fluorescent lights. Your local hardware store will be able to give you the best advice.

Connecting the Wiring

In the wall switch, the wires should be connected using the following method:

  • Connect the white and earth wires with your multi-purpose tool.
  • Connect the black wire from the appliance to the red switch
  • Connect the red wire to the orange switch
  • Connect the black wires to the power line

This must be done before wiring the appliance itself. To mount the luminaire, the wires of the ballast and those of the dimmer switch must be connected with connectors. To do this, the orange wire must be connected to the red wire before connecting the white wire to the white wires, the earth wire to the earth wire and the black wire to the black wire. Once the wiring is complete, switch the circuit breaker back on and test the dimmer switch.
