What to do if electrical sockets spark?

A sparking electrical outlet can be a source of concern for many reasons. Seeing sparks when plugging or unplugging an electrical appliance may seem normal, but could signal serious wiring problems.

It is always advisable to contact a licensed electrician whenever sparks occur in sockets. The experts can visit your home, assess the wiring and identify the source of the problem.

Signs of a wiring problem:

  • Large sparks due to interference with the electrical outlet
  • Long periods of sparks
  • Burning smell from a heated socket or burnt rubber insulation
  • Yellow and white sparks
  • Knowing the main reasons why sockets spark can help keep your home safe from electrical problems.

Excessive sparking

Short-circuiting occurs when excess current and heat accumulate in electrical outlets. The extra heat melts the insulation of electrical wires and exposes them. Exposed wires greatly increase the risk of a spark causing an electrical fire in the home.

Overloading sockets can also cause a sudden discharge of electric current. Sparks are a sign that a socket has been overloaded. Smaller heating strips can help to avoid overloading sockets. You should also call a professional if you suspect that the excess current is coming from melted and exposed cables.

Loose sockets

Buzzing and crackling noises are common signs of a loose electrical connection. You can check the problem by disconnecting the power from the mains and removing the plate covering the socket. Check the condition of the screws holding the wires where they connect.

However, you should not attempt to do this yourself unless you are also a qualified electrician! Call a qualified technician if you suspect that sockets are loose. Errors can cause short circuits. Loose sockets also indicate that the installation is too old. Calling an electrician gives you the opportunity to assess the entire wiring.

Poor wiring

The quality of the electrical wiring installed in your home determines its safety and efficiency. Poor wiring is often the cause of circuit overloads and sparks in sockets. In addition to sparks in sockets, you may also notice:

  • Dimming when connecting an appliance
  • Switches that trip when living in an older house
  • Hot and vibrating spots around sockets
  • Smoke from sockets
  • Burn spots on appliances

Bad wiring is a complex electrical problem that you should not try to solve yourself. Dangers of do-it-yourself repairs include power failure due to confused connections between voltage, neutral and earth, and electric shocks.
