Troubleshooting: There seems to be water, but nothing is on

It is never a good feeling when you hear water running in the pipes even though everything is turned off. Nobody wants a water leak because it can be expensive and cause a lot of damage. Whenever you think there is a problem, make sure you follow these steps to fix it.

Check the water meter

Even a slow leak causes the water movement indicator on the meter to turn about one turn in three minutes. Leaks can remain hidden underground or under a concrete slab, so if everything is off and the water movement indicator is turning, then there is a problem. If it is not spinning, there is no need to worry about a water leak.

Check everything else

If everything is off and you can hear water, there is probably a leak somewhere that is causing the water noise. Check all taps (including outside taps) and all sinks. Also check the refrigerator (if you have an ice machine), dishwasher, washing machine, air conditioner, showers, bathtubs, toilet tanks, water tanks, cellar, crawl space, swimming pool and irrigation systems. Leaks can be difficult to detect, so if you don't find a leak or damage, it means it might be hidden.

When you check your water heater or boiler, look at the temperature and pressure relief valve. It is possible that the valve is blocked and water is flowing down a pipe directly to a drain, so there are no leaks.

Also, if there is a siphon in the toilet, bathtub or shower with hair or paper laying on the edge, the siphon may drain slowly. This may cause you to hear dripping in the drain, and a slow drip may last an hour or more.

Turn off the water

Another thing you can do to solve the water noise problem is to shut off the water pipe in your home. If possible, also shut off the water in the street. If the sound of water stops after either of the two closures, this will help you identify the problem.

If you turn off the water in the house and the sound stops, the leak is inside the house. However, if you still hear the sound, close the valve in the street. If the sound stops, it means that the leak is underground, between the pavement and the main valve.
