SIMPLE BATHROOM REPAIRS YOU CAN DO YOURSELF

Toilets are ubiquitous fixtures, present in every type of home and business. Despite their constant presence, many homeowners may not know how to fix minor problems with their toilets and when to call in the professionals. Let's review some simple toilet repairs that you can do yourself:

Many people think of a toilet repair and immediately start looking at plumbing problems. However, there are parts of a toilet that can break or become misaligned without affecting the connected pipes or water flow. A broken seat or lid is one such problem that many homeowners face. A new seat can also refresh the appearance of a toilet, and the first steps in the process described below can also help to repair a loose seat.

First, the two hinges where the seat screws into the fixture must be located. They are usually located under a plastic cover that must be lifted or opened. Next, unscrew the plastic nuts and washers. To replace the seat, remove the nuts, washers and bolts, then follow the reverse procedure to fit a new cover/seat. To repair a loose or misaligned seat, adjust the desired angle and retighten the nuts to the hinge bolts.

REPAIRING A SLIDING TOILET

A sliding toilet can be an easy fix at home or indicative of a more complex problem. Among the simplest repairs to consider is replacing the flapper valve. The flapper is the flexible rubber valve connected to the flush lever. Its job is to stop the flow of water once the toilet tank is filled. Since the flapper is made of rubber, it can degrade due to wear and tear or stiffen so that it is no longer flexible enough to form a good seal. Sometimes the flapper closes on the chain that connects it to the flush lever, preventing it from making a seal. Adjusting the chain can solve the problem, while replacing the flapper itself is just as easy. If the flapper lets water flow when the tank is full, it is time to replace it.

You have to shut off the water flow to the toilet, then flush the toilet to remove most of the water remaining in the tank. At this point, assess how the flapper is connected to the toilet and remove it. Take the old flapper with you to a hardware shop and choose a substantially similar model, making sure that the dimensions are the same. Then, follow the package instructions to install the new flapper and eliminate the annoyance of the running toilet.
