Repairing a tap: how to repair a loose handle

Taps are used a lot every day, which is why repairing a tap is a very important thing to learn how to do. A loose tap handle can be extremely frustrating because it sometimes means that the tap does not close properly. Sometimes these taps can also squeak, which is very irritating.

If you can repair the taps yourself, you can save money because you will not have to call the plumber. Repairing a leaky bathroom or kitchen faucet will also save you money on your water bill. Here are some tips for repairing a loose tap handle.

Turn off the water

Turning off the water will prevent water leaks when working on the plumbing in your home. Make sure that the shut-off valve is completely closed. It is usually located under the sink, often in the back of the cabinet. If the valve is not located under the sink, the main shut-off valve in the house must be turned off. Open the tap to let all the water drain out. Once all the water has been removed, it will be possible to work on the plumbing safely and without any problems.

Remove the handle

Remove the handle from the tap. This is fixed with a screw at the top of the handle or at the back. It may be covered by a cover that must be carefully removed using a flat-blade screwdriver. If the handle itself is screwed in, you may need to use a spanner to remove it.

Remember never to take things apart above the sink, because if you do, you are very likely to lose a screw in the drain and never find it again. As a precaution, close the drain and put a towel or piece of netting in the sink to catch objects that might roll in.

Check the washing machine

After opening the tap, it is a good idea to take a look at the state of the washing machine. If the washer is damaged or too fragile, it is a good idea to remove it and replace it with one of the same type. It is always a good idea to replace the washer, even if it looks fine. If you are sure it is OK, you can lubricate it with a little plumber's putty to make sure it works properly. While the internal parts are exposed, look for excessive wear around all metal parts. Old, well-used tap handles can chip or break, preventing the handle from tightening properly.
