HOW TO REPAIR A LEAKY TAP

 ASSEMBLE THE NECESSARY TOOLS

To tackle the job yourself, you first need to gather all the necessary materials to repair the leaking tap. Usually, a leak is caused by replacing the washer or seat assembly, as the tap is not able to create a strong enough seal to counteract the water pressure. You will most likely need a flathead screwdriver, an adjustable spanner, replacement washers and O-rings, and penetrating oil.

DON'T FORGET TO SHUT OFF THE WATER

Once you have the tools, you cannot start dismantling the tap: there is one more thing to do: Turn off the water!

The water must be completely shut off from the handles of the sink to the knobs that control the main line. This step is essential to complete the job quickly and without getting wet.

CLEANING THE AERATOR

A dirty aerator could also be the culprit when trying to identify the source of a leaking bathroom or kitchen tap. Examine the aerator for particles around it. Remove particles from the aerator to see if the leak has been repaired. Also remember to tighten the nozzle firmly in case it is loose.

REPLACING THE WASHER/GASKET

When closing the tap, a washer is placed against the tap seat and completely shuts off the water flow. If the washer moves for any reason, it can cause drips and leaks. Usually, simply dismantling the tap and repositioning the washer will solve the problem. If the leakage lasts too long, it may be necessary to replace the washer and seat completely.

After disassembling the tap head, observe the washer and make sure that it fits perfectly in its original position. If for some reason you find that it is deformed, take the entire head to a hardware shop and find a new washer. Only a perfect match will work. Also, when replacing the washer, make sure it is made of a material that can handle both hot and cold water.

REPLACING THE O-RING

In many taps, including cartridge and compression models, O-rings are installed inside the handles to create a watertight seal. When the O-rings become damaged or loose, the seal can break, causing a leak near the handle.

REPLACING THE TAP

If the problem of the leaky tap persists even after trying the above quick fixes, it may be time to buy a new tap. Taps wear out a lot over time, especially those in the kitchen or bathroom. Buying a new one will solve the problem.
