HOW TO FIND AND REPAIR A BATHTUB LEAK

There are two main areas where a bathtub leak can occur: the dripping faucet or the pipes underneath. Other areas to look out for are the grout, the tub body and the drain. Depending on the nature of the leak, there are various repair options. However, signs of problems remain constant for both types of leaks. Watch out for curling vinyl floors or loose tiles, peeling or flaking paint, worn wood trim, water stains on the ceiling, mould on the walls or floor, or general stagnation around the base of the tub.

FINDING THE CULPRIT

First of all, it is necessary to locate the leak before repairing it. It is relatively easy to determine whether the tap or the leaks: just check if water is leaking from either area. To check whether the tub has a leak, clean the outside until it is completely dry and line the area with newspaper. When you start to fill the tub, keep an eye on the areas of the newspaper that start to get wet.

To test the drain, fill the tub completely with water. Once filled, listen carefully to the sound of the water draining out. If you hear these sounds and see that the water starts to decrease, it is likely that the drain assembly is not completely sealed.

If none of the above problems occur, it is most likely that the problem is coming from the pipes.

REPAIR THE LEAK

Faucet:

Begin the faucet repair process by completely shutting off the water supply. Proceed by removing the plastic plugs from the centre of the tap. Then, using a screwdriver, disconnect the tap handle. Using a spanner, remove the fixing nut used to hold the tap in place. Replace the stem washers and fix the new tap. Once finished, be sure to turn the water supply back on.

Grouting:

To restore leaks, locate and clean the area affected by the leak. If a crack is identified, seal the leak by applying mastic to the cracks. Before running water, wait about three hours to allow the sealant to dry completely.

Tub:

If you want to repair leaks in the actual bathtub, you will need a heavy-duty sealant with waterproofing power. Use sandpaper to flatten the sealant on the surface of the tub.

Drain:

If the water in the tub drains quickly, it is likely that the plumber's putty inside the plug is starting to come off.
