How do you install a toilet?

Unfortunately, toilets do not last forever. If your toilet has stopped working, has started to leak or is simply too expensive for your water bill, replacing an old toilet with a more efficient model can be a great way to update your bathroom.

When the time comes to install a new toilet, it is very important to make sure you do it correctly. Installing a toilet incorrectly means wasting time, water and money.

Preparing the space

Prepare the space. Spread the towels on the floor and remove everything in the bathroom that could be in the way. Wear work gloves and make sure your tools are arranged and organised. Before installing the new toilet, you must remove the old one.

Turn off the water. Find the stop valve. It is usually located on the wall or floor near the toilet. You want to stop the water flow in the supply line and in the toilet tank.

Disconnect the supply line. You will need an adjustable spanner to do this. Do your best to hold the water pipe in place while you disconnect it.

Removing the old toilet

Separate the tank from the bowl. This is the first step in removing the old toilet. Removing the tank first makes it easier to dismantle the rest of the toilet. Keep in mind that some toilets have a connected tank and bowl. In this case, do not try to separate them. If your toilet has a separate tank and bowl, you will have to unscrew the tank from the bowl with your adjustable spanner. Once you have disconnected the tank, lift it directly from the bowl.

Unscrew the tank. After removing the tank, the bowl must be unscrewed from the floor. Most toilets have plastic plugs over the floor bolts. If these cannot be unscrewed, try snapping them off with the help of the screwdriver.

Check the bolts and flange of the tub. These are the components that connect the new toilet to the floor. Make sure they are not rusted, broken or cracked.

Installing the new toilet

Install the new wax ring. This will be the buffer between the old flange and the new toilet.

Place the toilet on the flange. Align the bolt holes in the base of the bowl with the bolts in the floor flange. Make sure that there is a person there to help you lift the toilet.

Screw the toilet to the floor. Do not forget to put a washer and a nut on each bolt before tightening them. Fix the new tank in the same way as you removed the old one.
