DIAGNOSING A TOILET PROBLEM

The water level in the tank, the water speed, the air pressure in the system and the amount of water in the bowl must be perfect for a modern toilet to flush.

To solve this problem, pour three litres of water into the tank. If the water does not go down within the first two seconds, the problem is a clog that blocks the flow. The problem can be solved by using an auger to break the blockage. Make sure that the auger has a rubber sleeve around the cable so as not to scratch the porcelain of the tank. If the water returns to the normal level, try flushing, three times. If it does not work in any of the attempts, there is something wrong with the pipes under the toilet. If the flush works on each attempt, the problem could be between the tank and the bowl.

Sometimes, if something is obstructing the jets that feed the flush, the force exerted to push objects through the pipes is less.  Finally, if there is nothing obstructing the jets, something could have fallen into the edge and blocked the flow of water. The solution to this problem is, unfortunately, a new toilet.

If the fill valve inside the toilet tank does not fill properly, the toilet will not always flush. To find out if this is the problem, remove the small 1/8-inch plastic pipe that runs above the water level from the fill valve on the left side of the toilet tank to the central overflow pipe and check if there is a fast flow of water entering the pipe and filling the bowl.

If the toilet does not contain the two litres of water that should be in the bowl when you flush, the toilet will not flush properly. You must therefore pour about half a litre of water very slowly (so that it does not drain) into the bowl, so that it reaches its maximum volume. If the baffle does not stay afloat long enough, the water will only partially flow out of the tank and the required amount of water for flushing will not enter the toilet.
