Clogging the bathtub drain: mistakes to avoid

Clogging the bathtub drain is a job that everyone has to do sooner or later. Hair, dirt and other debris can get stuck in the drain and eventually the water does not drain properly or at all. Clogging the bathtub drain is not a difficult job, but there are a few methods to use and things to avoid to make sure it goes smoothly.

Commercial drain cleaning agents

Commercial drain cleaners are usually a good option when it comes to unclogging bathtub drains. Some work well, while others are not as effective. The problem is that many of them contain chemicals, which leach into the groundwater and can have a negative effect on a home's water quality. Some can even damage the pipes they are supposed to clean.

It can take up to an hour before we know whether they have worked or not, and very often, these materials rarely achieve the promised results. It is usually possible to unclog a bathtub drain much more quickly than detergents.

Plungers

When using a plunger to unclog a bathtub drain, you should not expect it to work on the first press. You need to create a vacuum to move the clog in the pipe.

You must also make sure that you use the right type of tumbler. There are two different types. One is oval and intended for toilets, while the other is round, ideal for sinks and tubs. Make sure you get the round type to unclog the bathtub drain.

Do not soak several times. Never use more than 5 strokes before breaking the vacuum and giving the tub a chance to empty. If the tub does not empty, repeat the operation a couple of times. Keep in mind that the plunger is not always able to clear a clog.

Dismantling the pipe

If other methods do not work to unclog the bathtub drain, it may be necessary to dismantle the pipe. This is a demanding job and you cannot simply dismantle the siphon. It is necessary to have a bucket or tub to collect the leaking water, otherwise you risk wetting the floor and causing a leak in the floor below.

Do not rush the work and make sure to remove the entire clog. Don't forget to run the snake down the pipe to make sure there are no other clogs. It is easier to do everything at once than to start unclogging the bathtub drain for the second time.
