Causes of loss of water pressure

Low water pressure at home is not only inconvenient, but also extremely frustrating, especially when you do not know what the problem is, where it comes from or how to solve it. Listed below are some of the most common situations that can occur and what can be done to solve the problem.

Shut-off valve deactivated

There is always the possibility that the main shutoff valve that allows water to be supplied to your home has somehow been set very low or turned off.

Clogged aerator

If the problem is only concentrated in certain areas, such as the kitchen and bathroom sink or the shower, it could be due to a clogged aerator. The problem is easily solved by unscrewing the nozzle, removing the aerator and cleaning it. It is also possible to buy a new one and start again.

Water main connection

Sometimes a problem occurs between the connection of the water main from your house to the city or county supply line. If you find standing water, mud or saturated soil near or around the connection point, contact your local water authority for assistance.

Running water elsewhere

This is perhaps one of the most common problems of low water pressure. If you are filling a paddling pool, washing the dog or watering the garden, it is easy to get distracted and forget to turn off the tap. A running tap is a sure reason to run water at low pressure elsewhere in the house.

Broken water pipe in the house

A broken water pipe in the house causes damage and can create mould. Walk around the house and look for signs of water on floors, walls, inside cupboards, under furniture, in outbuildings such as the garage, shed or laundry room or any other area where water lines run. Close all indoor and outdoor taps and check the water meter. If the dial turns, it means that water is flowing somewhere on the property. Close the shut-off valve to prevent further damage and call a plumber.
