3 COMMON TAP REPAIRS

The tap in the kitchen, bathroom or bathtub may leak from time to time. It may also spray water in the wrong direction or become noisy and squeaky. Taps generally have a lifespan of 10 years or more, so they probably do not need to be replaced, but small problems like this are common and can be addressed and solved with little experience. Repairing a tap doesn't take much, in fact here are three common tap repairs that can be done in a few hours or less.

A squeaking, screeching or clanking tap

If you start hearing strange sounds coming from your tap, chances are you need to do one of the following: replace the rubber washer, replace a cracked part of the hardware inside the unit, or repair the tap thread. All of these operations require the tap to be disassembled and reassembled.

Dripping tap

A tap that drips or runs water is probably caused by the diverter, a small valve located in the tap stem. It is necessary to disassemble the handle and pull out the diverter with a screwdriver. Then carefully take the diverter and soak it in a solution of equal parts white vinegar and boiling hot water. By putting the clean diverter back in its place, the tap should be as good as new.

A tap with an inconsistent flow

A clogged aerator, the screw screen that covers the tap spout, is most likely responsible for an inconsistent flow from the tap. Remove the aerator and clean it of deposits or scale, then reattach it. If the aerator is completely blocked or encrusted, you may consider replacing it. A new aerator is inexpensive and can be found at your local hardware shop.
