Toilet tank leaks in the bowl: Possible causes

If you suspect that the toilet tank is leaking into the bowl, there are some possible causes and simple ways to check the problem.

Confirm that the toilet tank is leaking

First of all, make sure that this is indeed the case. One of the easiest ways to do this is to put a few drops of blue food colouring in the water tank. Do not use the toilet for a few hours or, if possible, overnight. If the water in the tank turns any shade of blue, it means that the tank is leaking.

Another way to know that there is a leak is if the toilet runs water into the tank by itself, then stops and starts running again later.

Investigation of probable causes

There are a few possible reasons why the toilet tank may be leaking water into the bowl. Once the cause of the problem has been identified, measures can be taken to remedy it.

Toilet washer malfunction

The most common cause of this leakage is a malfunction of the rubber tab at the bottom of the tank.

When the rubber flap malfunctions, it does not close tightly enough and water can start to fill the tank. Often the flap may simply be worn.

For a quick solution, try flushing the toilet with the lid of the waste-holding tank raised while holding the flap down.

Cracks in the storage tank

If the waste-holding tank is cracked, it may also leak into the bowl. In this case, you should replace the toilet immediately or contact a professional. If the crack continues to crack, it could flood the entire house.

Loose tank-tank assembly

Loose bolts that secure the toilet tank to the bowl can cause the tank to leak. If the nuts are loose, tighten them with a spanner. However, be careful not to over-tighten them because the porcelain tank may break.
