Repairing a tap: how to repair a two-handle tap

 


Identifying the tap

The two-handle tap can be of three types: the tap with a washer, the diaphragm tap and the tap without a washer. The tap known as the seat-washer tap is generally the most common and can be identified by turning the handle. If the handle turns completely, it is a stem tap with a seat. Other types turn only a quarter of the way round. 

Turn off the water and start

Before you start repairing the tap, make sure the water is shut off. You will usually find a shut-off valve under the sink, but if it is not visible, you may need to shut off the water at the mains, outside or at the meter. Most sink taps are fixed to the sink by a screw that goes through the top. Sometimes it is covered by a button-shaped cap. You can also find handles screwed into the sides of the sink, but wherever you find the screw, you have to start unscrewing it and then pull the handle completely out of the sink.

It is possible that the tap is stuck to the sink, due to years of use or a layer of caulking. In this case, try using a handle puller, which avoids damaging the valve and the valve stem, but if this is not possible, gently tap on the base of the handle as you turn the tap.

Removing the tap

The tap can now be removed. Depending on the type of tap, either the lock nut or the stem sleeve can be unscrewed. If it is a diaphragm or seatless tap, simply pull it out of the sink. If it is a tap with a seat and washer, it is necessary to pull it out after the sleeve, using a screwdriver to unscrew the fittings. You may have to turn it clockwise or counterclockwise, but it should be easy to remove after a few turns.

Repairing the tap

The best solution is always to replace all removable parts, such as gaskets, washers, seals and O-rings. These need to be removed and new ones fitted. They are cheap and the stem itself will last for decades if you replace these parts regularly. Even a tap without washers has a washer, so check them all. If you notice damaged parts, such as a split pipe or a broken washer that has recently been replaced, remove them and replace them with similar items. If it is the stem itself that is damaged, take it to a local showroom or the supplier you bought the stock from and ask for a replacement.
