Plumbing installation of the kitchen sink drain

 

When installing a new sink or replacing a tap, the plumbing connected to the kitchen sink drain must also be changed. Replacing kitchen sink plumbing is simpler than you might think and usually takes about an hour. Using some basic household tools, you can replace the pipes and water pipes under the kitchen sink in no time at all. 

Turn off the water

First, shut off the water supply going to the kitchen sink. You need to locate the valves. They are usually located under the water lines leading to the hot and cold water taps. Turn the valve handles to the right.

Empty the water pipes

Release the water from the hot and cold water taps by opening them so that the water still in the pipes can drain out of the lines. The flow should decrease and eventually stop. If this does not happen, it means that the water has not been shut off completely.

Disconnecting the water pipes

Using the adjustable spanner, remove the hot and cold water pipes from the tap. Then repeat the operation for both water lines to disconnect them from the shut-off valves.

Disconnecting the drain

To disconnect the drain from the sink, loosen the nut at the base of the sink drain with a pipe spanner. Then slowly screw the entire pipe assembly from the area where it enters the main drain. This should be at a point near the centre of the floor of the rear cabinet. 

Tape

Using Teflon plumber's tape, wrap the threaded end of the hot water tap with a piece about 15 cm long. Repeat the procedure for the threaded end of the cold water tap.

Connecting the new water pipes

Now you can screw the new water lines onto the threaded pipes leading to the hot and cold water taps. Again, wrap Teflon tape around the threaded ends of the shut-off valves and screw in the hot and cold water lines.

Connect the drain

Connect the bottom of the drain assembly to the main drain, which is located at the rear bottom of the cabinet. However, do not tighten it yet. Then adjust the height of the drain assembly so that each side meets the appropriate hole in the bottom of the sink.

Fix the drain

Then, using a pipe spanner, screw each side of the drain assembly onto the bottom of the sink drain and tighten until it is secure. Make sure not to over-tighten the nuts to prevent them from leaking. Next, fasten the bottom drain assembly at the point where it connects to the floor drain. Again, do not over-tighten.
