How to unclog an exhaust vent

Check if the vent is damaged

When drains are not working properly, it is likely that there is a problem with the vent. This vent is a system that allows air to push waste down as it flows through the pipes. When it gets clogged, the drains slow down or even stop working. Sometimes what might look like a clog is actually a damaged vent pipe. Pipes protrude from the roof and wind, falling branches or pieces of ice can break the PVC pipe. Before attempting to remove a clog, check that the pipe is still solid.

Position the ladder against the building

Using a ladder, place it against the building close to where you will be working on the drain pipe. Make sure that the ladder is properly anchored and that there is someone to hold the bottom as you climb up.

Position of the ladder on the roof

If your roof has a steep slope, you will need to use a roof ladder to be able to work without worrying about falling. Before climbing onto the roof, tie a rope to the top rung of the roof ladder. Using the rope, lift the roof ladder up to the roof and lay it flat. Position it at the vent and you will be able to climb up the slope and work from the ladder.

Look in the vent

Once you reach the drainage vent, use a torch and try to locate the cause of the blockage. Often it is a nest or something else near the top. In that case, you can remove it with your hands and a small garden tool.

Use a hydraulic snake

If you can't see anything near the top or if the clog is out of reach, use a drain snake to open the way. A heavy cable with a cutting attachment will help remove the clog.

Use a hose

If you do not have a drain snake or if the snake is unable to remove the clog, use a garden hose. Insert the hose into the pipe and open the water. Listen for the stagnation of water in the pipe. You should hear a sudden release of the clog as the weight of the water pushes it down. Otherwise, if the water starts to overflow, you should contact a professional.
