How to solve problems with loss of water pressure in the bathroom

Besides helping you stay fresh and clean, the best part of a shower is the water pressure. It helps relieve stress, reduces aches and pains and gives a fantastic feeling. What is not pleasant is when the pressure suddenly drops to a trickle for no apparent reason.

The reality is that there is usually an obvious reason for low water pressure. Here are the main factors that can cause low toilet water pressure and how to solve them:

Check the water pressure regulator

The pressure regulator is a valve that ensures that the water entering the house is not so pressurised that it damages the pipes. If the valve is not working properly, the plumbing may not work. If this is the case and you hear a thumping sound inside the walls, the pressure regulator is the likely culprit.

The pressure regulator is usually located at the point where the main water line enters the house. Replacing the water pressure regulator is best left to professionals. A licensed plumber can find the correct brand and size regulator for your specific needs.

Hot water pressure loss

If the problem only occurs when using hot water, the problem is the water heater. If you are lucky, the shut-off valve may be partially closed. Simply turn the valve to reopen it. If this does not work, however, we recommend that you contact a professional to take a look at the inner workings of the water heater. Sediment build-up can accumulate over time and the pipes carrying the hot water to the tap can corrode.

Only the bathroom tap has low pressure

If the problem only occurs in one tap, be it the sink, shower or bathtub, it is likely that that tap needs to be cleaned or replaced. In the case of taps, a clogged aerator can reduce water pressure. To clean taps, unscrew the nozzle and put it in a solution of vinegar and water. Thorough cleaning can also remove limescale or other deposits that have built up. You can perform the same maintenance on shower heads by filling a plastic bag with vinegar and water and securing it with a rubber band around the fixture.

Older taps may have limescale build-up inside them. If you have a rusty tap that is difficult to open and close, consider replacing it. A new tap should guarantee a constant flow of water for years.
