How to repair a leaky toilet base

A leaky toilet is a common problem in an old house. It can give the bathroom an unpleasant appearance and make the surroundings feel unhygienic. It can also ruin the bathroom floor, leaving stains on the floor tiles. Repairing toilet leaks is easy if you know the connections. Water leaks at the base of the toilet can be due to many reasons. Therefore, it is important to know why it occurs in order to repair the leaking toilet.

Identify the problem

Take a cloth or towel and clean the base thoroughly so that it is dry. Now start by checking the connection points from the tank towards the underside.

Replace the tank and toilet connection bolts

There are two bolts connecting the tank to the toilet. These bolts are visible from inside the tank. They are secured with rubber washers to prevent water leakage. If the bolts are loose, tighten them from the outside of the tank with a flathead screwdriver. Be very careful not to over-tighten so as not to crack the tank. This should solve the problem. If not, move on to the next step.

Replace the washers

If tightening the screws has not helped, the washers may have worn out and need to be replaced. To do this, the water source must first be closed. Remove both bolts connecting the tank to the toilet. Clean the area and use new washers in the bolts. Fasten them securely with a screwdriver. At this stage, you can also fix the gasket at the base of the tank to stop all possible leaks.

Wax ring at the base

If the leaking toilet has not yet been repaired, check whether the base of the toilet is leaking after every flush. This may be due to the failure of the wax ring. Shut off the water source and empty the tank once with the flush, so that water does not leak when you remove the base of the toilet. Clean the floor and remove the bolts connecting the base of the toilet to the floor with a screwdriver and spanner. Insert a cloth into the flush pipe to prevent a bad smell of sewer gas.

Remove the old ring with a putty knife and scrape the area clean. Turn the toilet bowl upside down on the waste paper and fix the new gasket onto the horn of the bowl. Then secure the base of the toilet again by tightening the bolts.
