How to repair a leaky kitchen sink tap

 Prepare

Start by shutting off the water to the mains in the house, rather than simply turning off the tap. Locate the main switch and turn it off, then run water through the tap until it dries. This will prevent fountains from forming when the tap is turned on. Close the tap again.

Accessing the valve unit

Before any other operation, insert the filter or plug into the drain. This will prevent small parts of the kitchen sink tap from flowing down the drain and being lost. Next, it is necessary to remove the decoration from the top of the leaky sink tap. You need to pry it off with a flathead screwdriver or a knife. Set it aside to put it back on later.

You will now be able to see the fixing nut, which will have to be loosened with the adjustable spanner. Use adhesive tape on the jaws of the spanner to avoid scratching the sink tap. Turn the spanner anti-clockwise until the retaining nut is removed and set it aside. Now you have reached the valve. Using the spanner, pull the valve out of the sink tap.

Washing machine

If you hold the valve upside down, you should see the washer at the bottom. This is held in place by a screw. Remove the screw and pull out the old, worn washer. Look through your selection of washers until you find one of the same size. Insert it into the valve and replace the screw, so that the washer is firmly seated on the valve.

Replace

Push the valve all the way into the valve, ensuring that it is inserted correctly. Failure to do so will result in water leakage once the tap is reopened. Take a few extra seconds to make sure it is inserted correctly. At this point, replace the sealing nut, turning it clockwise with the spanner. Take care not to over-tighten the nut. Reposition the decoration over the tap.

Test

Turn the water back on to the mains, then open the tap to let the water run briefly. Turn the water back on and observe whether the sink tap is still leaking. If not, the problem is solved. If not, it is possible that the washer is the wrong size. Turn off the water and dismantle the tap, replacing the washer with one of the correct size for the tap.
