FIXING A LEAKY TAP ONCE AND FOR ALL

Faucets are one of the essentials of a home, used for everything from cleaning dishes to washing hands. However, as they are among the most used appliances in a home, it is not surprising that some of their parts become loose or deteriorate quickly. This can lead to the dreaded dripping faucet. Hearing this constant sound is annoying enough, not to mention the fact that all the leaking water is money that literally goes down the drain. It is important to take the right measures not only to stop the leak, but also to repair it once and for all.

ASSEMBLE THE NECESSARY TOOLS

To tackle the job yourself, you will first have to gather all the materials needed to repair the leaking tap. Typically, a leak occurs when the washer or seat assembly needs to be replaced because the faucet cannot create a strong enough seal to counteract the water pressure. You will most likely need a flathead screwdriver, an adjustable spanner, replacement washers and O-rings. These items are readily available at a local hardware store and are relatively inexpensive to keep on hand for future projects.

DON'T FORGET TO SHUT OFF THE WATER

Once you have the tools, you cannot start dismantling the tap: there is one more thing to do: Turn off the water! This is probably one of the easiest and worst mistakes to make in this project, because now you not only have a leaky tap, but you are also at risk of water damage. The water must be completely shut off from the handles of the sink to the knobs that control the main line. This step is essential to complete the job quickly and without getting wet.

SOLVING THE PROBLEM

Using your tools, you can now dismantle the tap. Penetrating oil is useful for screws or stubborn parts that are stuck; the oil will loosen the part and allow you to proceed. You can record the removal process or simply set the items aside in the order in which they were taken. This will ensure that the tap is reassembled correctly without introducing new problems. Replace the washer and O-ring, as they are probably the cause of the problem. They should fit perfectly into the valve seat. Once fixed, put the tap back in place and admire your work.
