Electrical socket emits buzzing or sparks: 4 causes

If an electrical socket emits buzzing or sparks, the problem must be corrected immediately to avoid the possibility of an electrical fire. Although correcting this type of problem in sockets is a fairly simple operation, it is one that should not be put off.

Worn contact blades

If, when connecting a device, the socket emits a buzzing or sparking noise, this is a good sign that there is a problem with the contact blades inside the socket. Over time, the blades holding the poles of the electrical plug may wear out or loosen.

If this happens, go to the main switch box and turn off the circuit that powers the socket. To check that it is not the device itself, you can try plugging another device into the outlet. If the plug is not secure or if it falls out again, the problem is with the socket and not with the electronic device.

There are some types of sockets that allow you to tighten the contact slats within the socket assembly. However, in most cases, it is much easier and safer to replace the socket.

Loose wires or screw terminals on the socket

Another common cause of arcing or sparking in sockets is a loose wire in the terminal screw connector on both sides of the socket. Sometimes the terminal screws come loose and the wire connected to the terminal can be moved a little when trying to connect a device. In this case, the wire may move inside the terminal and create an arc or spark.

You can check this problem by simply removing the socket from the wall and checking the screw terminal to make sure it is tight. If the wire appears burnt or damaged, it should be stripped and reinstalled.

Incorrect wiring connections

Sometimes, the arcing or buzzing in a socket has nothing to do with the socket itself. Rather, it could be a bad connection in the wiring inside the socket box. Remove the socket and check the connections inside the box.

Frayed or damaged wiring

While inside the socket box, always inspect the wiring leading to the socket. Sometimes wiring can become frayed or damaged and needs to be replaced. If you find a damaged section of wiring, you can simply cut it off with a pair of wire cutters and splice a shorter piece, securing it with wire covers.
