Common DIY electrical errors

 Do not test voltage

Even if you turn off the electrical circuit, you must use a voltage tester to be 200% sure that everything is off before you start work. You can buy a voltage tester at any home improvement shop.

Do not use GFCI sockets near water

Simply put, water and electricity don't mix. This is why it is important to install GFCI (ground fault circuit interruption) sockets in rooms such as the kitchen and bathroom. GFCI sockets protect you and your family from electric shocks by interrupting the power supply when they detect an overheating or power failure

For example, if you drop a hairdryer into a sink full of water, the GFCI will detect the change in current and cut the power. GFCI sockets can be difficult to install and only provide protection if they are installed correctly.

Reversal of hot and neutral wires

Also known as reverse polarity, this is one of the most dangerous mistakes homeowners make. The mistake occurs when homeowners reverse hot and neutral wires when changing lamps or sockets. The wires are generally colour-coded, but connecting them to the wrong terminal can destroy equipment or cause serious shocks.

Using the wrong wire for the situation

Wires are not suitable for everyone. In a hardware shop, you can find indoor and outdoor wires of different gauges. It is essential to use the right type of wire for the job to avoid overloading circuits, damaging appliances or starting electrical fires. A professional electrician knows the right wire to use for every job around the house.

Cut wires that are too short

Short wires can create surprisingly big problems.  As a rule of thumb, make sure that the wires protrude three to six inches from the electrical boxes. You should have sufficient length to be able to splice the wire coming out of the wall to any appliance or socket to be connected.

Cutting the wires too short makes it difficult to make correct electrical connections and can lead to dangerous situations. To solve the problem, you must either run the wires again or add new ones.
