How to repair a buzzing or sparking electrical outlet

If you have an electrical outlet that is buzzing or from which you can see sparks, you should check the problem by immediately turning off the circuit breaker and immediately repairing the electrical outlet to eliminate the risk of fire in your home. When you hear strange sounds or see flashes of light from an electrical outlet, the best way to solve the problem is to simply replace it with a new one

Cut the power to the room

Go to the main switch box in your home and locate the circuit breaker for the faulty socket. Once you have located the correct switch, turn it to the 'Off' position.

Check the safety of the circuit

Once the circuit breaker has been switched off, you need to check the socket with a multimeter to ensure that no electric current is flowing through it. Set the multimeter to measure the voltage, then place the probe tips in the blade sockets of the socket to ensure that there is no voltage in the socket. Be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses during this operation.

Remove the faulty socket

Once you have ascertained that the socket is not receiving electricity, you can begin the removal process. First, remove the screw that holds the cover plate. There should be two screws holding the socket in place in the socket box. Remove them and set them aside. Finally, pull the socket out and remove the wires from the socket. In most cases, the wires are connected to a screw terminal. However, in some cases the wires can be inserted into a small circular opening at the back of the socket. In this case, use a pair of needle-nose pliers.

Checking and inspecting the wiring

While inside the socket box, inspect the wiring to ensure that it is not damaged. If it is badly damaged, remove the damaged part; if it is burnt out, however, the socket may need to be rewired, so you should seek the advice of a qualified electrician before proceeding further. This means that the ampere rating of the circuit breaker is too high for the wiring and if the heating is such that it causes damage inside the box, the wiring inside the walls may also be in the same condition.
