How to repair a broken dimmer switch at home

Repairing a broken dimmer switch is a very simple operation that can be done in just a few minutes. Instead of calling a professional electrician, you can do the job yourself. With this guide and the right tools, you will be able to repair your broken dimmer switch in no time and save money.

Switching off the power supply

The first and most important step in working with electrical installations is to disconnect the power supply from the mains. Once you have turned off the main switch assigned to that circuit, double-check with the circuit tester to make sure no current is reaching the switch.

Remove the plate

Remove the switch plate by unscrewing the screws holding it in place on the wall. Once the screws are removed, it will be possible to pull out the dimmer switch for repair.

Remove switch

Slowly pull out the dimmer switch, without gripping the metal parts of the switch. Pull the switch out just far enough to expose the wires.

Purchase a new switch

Purchase a new switch from the hardware store; you can take the old dimmer switch with you to get a new one just like the one you removed. While at the hardware store, purchase wire nuts.

Connect the Wires

Connect the new dimmer switch to the wires removed from the old switch. Be sure to match the colours of the wires as you connect them.

Wire nuts

Place wire nuts on the connected wires to hold them in place. The wire nuts must be screwed on correctly and ensure that there are no bare wires.

Checking the wires

Pull the wires slightly to make sure they are connected correctly; you must not have any loose wires in your switch.
