Emergency water leakage - What to do

Shut off the water to the appliance

Close the plumbing emergency directly at the source. For example, suppose you have a flooded bathroom or a leaky tap. The plumbing systems in your home should be equipped with individual shut-off valves connected to the source. One of the few exceptions is the shower. For the shower, it is necessary to shut off the entire water system of the house.

Shutting off the water to the water heater

If the hot water heater leaks and you have a standard storage tank, there is a specific shut-off valve for the water heater. An important fact to keep in mind is that even when this valve is closed, the water heater still has about 50 gallons of water stored in the tank. The water will continue to leak. Closing the valve on the water heater only prevents it from filling up with more water. The valve is usually located on top of the water heater and has a lever handle or a round handle.

If the valve is in good working order (sometimes they can corrode and become unusable), turning it stops the supply of cold water to the water heater. If the water heater is up to standard and has a tank and drain line, you can solve the emergency before it escalates.

Turning off the water in the house

Not all water leaks occur at toilets and taps; in fact, most occur inside walls or ceilings. Water gushing from the ceiling or walls can cause serious panic attacks. Not only is it very stressful, but it can also cause serious property damage. Don't wait for this to happen to learn how to shut off the water in your home! It is useful to test the plumbing system from time to time, especially if this means preventing future property damage or an expensive flood clean-up. If you live in a residential home, your home's shut-off valve is usually located right in front of you. It is usually located under the tap to which the garden hose connects. Hopefully, this valve has a lever that indicates that it is a ball valve. The lever must be turned clockwise.
