How to install water shut-off valves

In most houses built in recent years, shut-off valves have been installed on the hot and cold supply lines leading to kitchen and bathroom taps. A shut-off valve allows you to shut off the water supply to a single tap, while leaving the water open in the rest of the house. If you have ever had to turn off the water supply in the whole house just to replace an appliance, you understand how individual valves can make life easier for everyone.

If you live in an old house or if your builder did not put shut-off valves in the pipes, you might consider adding them yourself. The installation process is simple, as most of them use pressure joints that do not require pipes to be welded, and it is the type of installation that homeowners can do themselves with standard plumbing tools.

Here is how to install shut-off valves on existing copper supply lines.

Step 1

First, check how the supply lines connect to the sink. Some lines go up through the floor to the base of the tap, while others exit the wall behind the sink and bend upwards at a 90-degree angle to reach the base of the tap.

When pipes go up through the floor, straight valves are installed. If the water pipes come from behind the wall, you have an option. If the vertical path of the supply line is 20-25 cm, you can install a straight shut-off valve in the path. If the length is not so great, you can install an angle shut-off valve, sometimes called a 'corner shut-off'. The angle stop valve is attached to the horizontal pipe and then the supply line is run vertically.

Step 2

Determine where to install the shut-off valves and measure the distance from the base of the tap. You need to know this distance in order to purchase the right size supply lines.

Step 3

Once this is done, you can get to work by shutting off the main water supply to the house. This is probably located near the water meter, where the main water supply enters the house. After shutting off the water, open a tap on the lower floor of the house and let the water pipes run until they are completely empty.

Step 4

Disconnect the water supply line running at the base of the system you will be working on. In some cases this is simply a screw connection, in others a welded pipe.

Step 5

Slide the compression nut of the shut-off valve onto the pipe with the thread facing the open end. Then insert the compression ring.
